  • How hard is it to change shocks on a toyota corolla?

Hey, I need to make a few repairs to my car, I need to change my shocks, and the ball joints. It's a toyota corolla, I think its about a 92. Does anyone know how hard it would be to do? and does anyone know of any %26quot;how to%26quot; sites? It's going to cost a fortune to bring to the shop :(How hard is it to change shocks on a toyota corolla? One of our associates who has worked on Toyota cars said you can change the shocks on your own. But, he advises that you need to compress the spring, and that can be very dangerous/ He said to use extreme caution when removing the spring. In order to do so, you will need a spring compressor that you should be able to rent from your local auto parts store. Then he suggests visiting your nearby library or auto store or bookstore to find a repair manual for your Corolla. The manual will have detailed step-by-step directions to replace the struts. Good luck! How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?

I need to get my rear brakes/rotors, one ball joint, two rear wheel bolts, and my serpentine belt replaced. I also need an oil change. How much should all this cost to fix including labor? Thanks! How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?it will most likely run about 600.00 to 800.00 dollars. you can also go into a shop and get a written estimate. and that is at no charge. make sure it includes the price of parts and book time labor.. book time labor is the recommended time to make repairs to your car. the ball joint is about an hour, the belt is about an hour, half hour for each wheel stud, and about 2.5 hours for your rear brakes depending on the e-brake shoes. good luck!!How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?Parts, you're looking at about 300$ from autozone, expect about 350$ from an independent shop, 450$ from the dealer. I'd estimate about 5 hours of labor by the book, at 65$ an hour which is what most independent shops charge, you're looking at about 325$ in labor. The dealer may charge as much as 100$ an hour, sometimes more. How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?around 300 usd should be fairHow much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle? What the heck happened to your car?

Rear brakes+ rotors (oem replacement around 150); ball joint at least 100, wheel bolts? Under 20. Serp belt about 30-40. But the installation is going to kill you 4 hours by book? About that...

At least 500 altogether at an indy shop.

How much should it cost to change a lower control arm in a 1993 old achieva, plus ball joint.?

I'm guessing this is on a 93 Achieva S, not SL, but here's a ballpark figure:

    OEM (aka 'brand-new'):

Lower control arm assembly - approximately $212

    knuckle (aka ball joint) $253

    labor $100

    alignment $50

LKQ (like kind and quality, aka 'used')

What's nice about your Achieva is that on the inside, it's exactly like a Pontiac Grand Am, a Buick Skylark, a Chevy Corsica, etc. Used parts are numerous and readily available.

Expect to pay about $65-75 for the lower control arm, and about the same for the ball joint; plus labor and alignment, about another $100-150.How much should it cost to change a lower control arm in a 1993 old achieva, plus ball joint.?i own a repair shop, and the labor part of it cost around 50 bucks to do,,the part you can get used from a good junk yard for around 35 bucks,,so that isn't to bad of a repair to have to do,,but that's what i charge,,you can use this price to help save you some money on the repair,,good luck,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

  • What would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them?

I have a Toyota Corolla 1996 with 220 K + on it. I am wondering what would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them? What are the signs? Thanks in advance for answer. What would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them?First sign of worn out ball joint, is too much play! and obviously bad handling. to check put the on a jack stand and wiggle the wheel, you can feel right away if there is any play ! now if you have handling problem on a car with 220k miles..it could be anything, suspension, joints, bushings you have replace everything to get it right, but it wouldn't be worth it. if the car is safe to drive I wouldn't put any money in to it. the reality is no matter how much you spend, it's only worth about $500 to $1000, max.

Good Luck! What would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them?Uneven tire wear and bad handling. Also you might hear a clunk when going over a bump or pothole.

Question about my 1998 Mercury Mountaineer ball joints?

I recently took my truck to get an oil change and the mechanic told me i needed to replace the upper and lower ball joints. Yes, the trucks tires do vibrate around 60mph but then quits. I'm thinking of changing the sway bar end links now because I am strapped for cash. Do you think this will help until I can get it taken care of and how long do you think I might have before I have to change those ball joints? ThanksQuestion about my 1998 Mercury Mountaineer ball joints? If you have a vibration that starts %26amp; stops at a certain speed,it's probably a wheel balance issue,Have the tires balanced %26amp; rotated %26amp; see if that doesn't help.As far as ball joint wear, does the truck make any noise(bangs or clunks)when you hit a bump or hole? Are the front tires cupping or wearing unevenly? These are a few clues that you might need some front end repair work. Also, keep in mind that many shops that advertise a low price on oil changes,do so to get your car on the rack, and then try to sell you whatever they think they can get away with.I hope this helps you, good luck!Question about my 1998 Mercury Mountaineer ball joints?you should take your vehicle to a mechanic that you trust

I looking for a "how to" to walk me through changing out an upper ball joint on a '97 dodge ram 3500 4x4. Can?

I've looked at the situation and it looks like I might have to pull the whole knuckle off to get at the ball joint. also I am starting to understand that I will have to do the lower joint in order to get at the upper.I looking for a %26quot;how to%26quot; to walk me through changing out an upper ball joint on a '97 dodge ram 3500 4x4. Can?you do have to pull the complete knuckle assembly off it to get the ball joints off, the problem you,ll have will be the bearing assembly is going to be frozen on it and it will probably ruin it by the time you get it off, even soaking it real good with penetrating oil may not help it that much, there's also the issue your going to run in to on removing the axle from it,if your not real careful you,ll damage the inner seal in the differential unit and it will leak real bad once its put back together again, and you will have to remove the lower ball joint because the press wont have enough room to clear and press both of them out,and be real careful which one you put back in first,or else you,ll wind up taking one of them back out to get the other one back in,i did one this week and im telling you the bearing isn't going to fall strait out in your hands, its not going to be easy, good luck.I looking for a %26quot;how to%26quot; to walk me through changing out an upper ball joint on a '97 dodge ram 3500 4x4. Can?in fact you do have to pull the knuckle off to do the ball joints. and yes you have to do the lower ball joint to do the upper one. you need a ball joint press and the cones for the truck. not too bad of a job but can be a hassle if things are rusted and seized in there.

    take off tire.

    disconnect brake caliper and rotor.

    disconnect tie rods.

loosen ball joint nuts but leave them on.

smack knuckle with hammer at ball joint to release ball joints.

    take off axle nut.

disconnect three bolts for bearing. (back side of knuckle).

position the ball joint press to press out upper ball joint.

position ball joint press to press out lower ball joint.

    re assemble in reverse order.

I am always down for trying to repair vehicles yourself. In the case of ball joints I would have a shop do that for you. No Not the dealer -- they will overcharge you.... Its not rocket science to change them but you will need some specialized tools like spring compressors forks and other stuff.... I dont know what state you are in but I am here in the northeast. They use lots of salt and sand on the roads in the winter. because of this there is usualy a bit of rust under the vehicles and bolts have a tendency to snap off instead of screw off. It can be really frustrating to deal with parts that dont want to come off.... I changed my shocks, water pumps exhaust -- even a fuel tank once -- Ball joints? to heck with that!! Why buy tools that you may never use again when the same money can pay a mechanic....... While your at it change the shocks and any bushings that might be bad while its apart!!

You will however need a ball joint press to get the old joints out and the new ones in. And an air compressor and an impact wrench is preferred even if not completely necessary.

And if you are going to all this trouble, i'd recommend Moog balljoints, NOT the one most of the discount parts stores sell. if the box doesn't say Moog -DON'T install them, even if the parts guys say they are made by Moog and just boxed under a different name. they are inferior quality parts.

How difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?

I recently purchased a 93 GMC K3500 with a 6.2 TD and was told it desperately needs new upper and lower ball joints, idler arm and pitman arm. I like to try to do my own work but I don't want to get into something that is beyond my capabilities. I know my way around Chevy trucks to an extent, but have never tackled this situation. Any feedback from someone who has done this before? Is this something I could do myself, or is this mechanic material? How difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?its easilt something you can do yourself, you might want to invest in a puller for the pitman arm, or if you have a big enough gear puller, you can usually make that work, the ball joints are just a general pain in the but, if you do not have a press at your house you can try using a small one cranked with a ratchet, but most often they get stuck in there pretty good and you may have to take the whole control arm to the parts store to get pressed out. overall it is something that is worth doing yourself, who knows, they may just pop out with a hammer, every vehicle is defferent. you will save a boatload of cash doing this yourselfHow difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?None of it is simply %26quot;easy%26quot; really, and ball joints can be a real pain sometimes doing it on the ground. How hard is it to change the ball joints on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4?

I know that the ball joints (upper AND lower) both need to be replaced. I have priced the parts on my own, and it would be SO much cheaper to do it myself. My question is, is this something that I could do myself at home? I've become pretty good at fixing most small things, but I haven't tackled anything like this before. I know all about the tools I will need to rent, which are all available at Autozone. I've done brake work, easy things like the alternator (a few times), shocks, etc., but have never messed with anything too big. Thanks! How hard is it to change the ball joints on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4?If you have the right tools (a ball-joint press is really the only special tool), it isn't that bad. Give yourself plenty of time to do it (like a whole day) just in case something comes up. Hopefully you have another way to get to the parts store in case you end up needing something in the middle of the job. If it ever gets off-road, you may want to consider changing the u-joints in the front axle at the same time since you;ll already have the axles out. Even if you don't change them, now is a good time to at least refill them with grease.

Get a service manual and go for it (there are online writeups as well, but they're not as convenient as having a book next to you). You never learn if you do try.

Bought it new and it now has over 140,000 relatively trouble free miles on it. i really got my moneys worth from this car.How do I change the lower ball joint on my 2000 Chevy Malibu?Ball joints ... shudder... OK the sad truth is I have not had to change a ball joint in a few years but I do know chevy's .. from the factory these ball joints are riveted in place. not bolted. these means you will need to grind off the tops and beat them out with a punch and mallet. not a hammer you will be all day using a hammer. small sledge hammers will work. the other hard part is separating the wheel assembly from the ball joint. this usually takes a special tool called a ball joint separate. it is a 2 pronged piece of steel with a blunt end for beating on with a mallet.

once the old one is off the new one will come with bolts to bolt it in place. when you install the wheel assembly back on to the ball joint you will need a torque wrench. you will need to find the torque specs on these bolts to insure you do not over or under tighten them.

this is not an easy repair. it takes the right tools time and brute force.

I cannot find any material on how to do it anywhere.I want to change ball joints on 4X4 Ford F350 Super duty, help!?You didn't specify the model year you are referring to, but if it's a 1999-2004 model year, I wouldn't recommend this job to be attempted by a do-it-yourselfer. The reason being, to reinstall the PVH (pulse-vacuum-hub) seal requires use of a special driver or else the 4x4 will no longer work. Also, once you remove the driveshafts and the four 21mm nuts that secure the hub and bearing assembly, you probably won't be able the to separate it from the steering knuckle without ruining it, since 9 times out of 10, they usually seize up. If you need more info, you can e-mail me.

  • How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?

I'm having a hard time making right turns. The power steering fluid is full. The dust boots on the lower ball joints on both sides is cracked. Should I attempt to replace the ball joints myself or just take it to the shop? What would be the average price for all four ball joints to be replaced? Thanks! How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?Raise the front end off the ground, place jack stands under the frame so the front suspension hangs free. Take a long pry bar or a wrecking bar if that's all you have. Move the lower 'A' frames up and down. Grab the tires and see if they move around or feel %26quot;loose%26quot;. If the ball joints are bad, you'll see them move. You can also work the steering back and forth and maybe see whats binding. Ball joints are not hard to change, they are not very expensive. How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?zzzzzzzzHow Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?Above are good answers. Check first according to what said.

Ball joints are not too expensive and they not hard to replace, just work safe. I not sure of the tool name. I call it a %26quot;Tuning Fork%26quot; It just a simple tool you hammer between the ball and where it bolt in and it pop out easy (We hope). I would suggest you get a cheap repair manual for $15-20 at the auto-part store, many will rent/loan the tuning fork if you not want to buy.

Also, as mentioned some use a Rivet type mount and it may need drilled out, the new ball joints come with bolts to mount them. How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe? If they are the original ones they are riveted to the control arm assembly. I usually grind the heads of the rivets off and punch the rest through. New ones come with bolts to bolt onto control arm.

How to change ball joints on a cutlass ceira?

Proper tools and equipment and knowing what year the car is to get parts. How to change ball joints on a cutlass ceira?Simple answer is you take off the old ones and put on new ones.

More complicated answer is, if you have to ask how to do it, you should bring it to someone who knows how to do it already, or at least have someone with you who knows how to do it. It'll suck to get them off, and not be able to get the new ones on. There are tricks and procedures.

How to change a ball joint on a 95 nissan altima?

Sorry to say this if you have worn one ball joint out you need more than just ball joints to properly repair your car. Lower control arms come with two inner bushings and a new ball joint. please replace both sides then check all the tie rods and shock struts too. You will save the alignment costs if you completely rebuild the suspension and only align the car once. Ball joint is part of the (lower transverse link) that is what Nissan calles it. The alternative is new car payments.

how to change ball-joints on a 1998 ford E-150, or should i take it to mechanic?

I don't remember all the details off the top of my head, so I won't give detailed descriptions.

You will need a manual. Chilton's is about $30.

You will need a ball joint press, with adapters. Expensive, yet can be rented at some auto parts stores (such as Autozone). %26quot;Rental%26quot; is what they call it, it's actually a refundable deposit.

You will also need a floor jack, or a good size hydraulic bottle jack.

    And a couple of jackstands.

A good set of wrenches. (impact would be handy, but not necessary)

    A big hammer.

A firm, flat surface to work on.

  • How do i know when to change my ball joint?

i was wondering what signs let me know when it's time to change my ball joint. because recently my 1994 honda accord is making a banging sound, like metal on metal....it sounds like the problem is around the drivers side...but i'm not sure exactly where it's coming from. How do i know when to change my ball joint?generally aball joint sound is usually when you go over pot holes

best bet is to take it to speedy or one of those places it is a free inspection they will tell you what is wrong then you can elect to fix it yourselfHow do i know when to change my ball joint?First step is to determine where exactly the noise is coming from, usually when your ball joints go bad your steering gets loose and uneven tire wear is present. Does the noise only happen when you turn your steering wheel? It might be your CV joint (constant volicy joint) this is in the front wheel drive and usually costs about $250.00 per side to repair. Take it do a reputable garage and have them check it out for you, better to find out exactly what the ptoblem is and get that fixedHow do i know when to change my ball joint?Jack your car up just enough so that the front tire is off the ground and you can put a bar (cro-bar or an equivalent) try lifting the bar and prying. If you see tire wiggle (not travel [suspension]), wether it be up and down or side to side, you know you need a new ball joint. How do i know when to change my ball joint?Usually a ball joint squeaks and the tire wears unevenly. If it's a CV joint, put it in reverse, turn the wheel all the way to one side and go back in a slow circle. It'll go click, click.

How do you change the ball joints on a 1991 ford ranger?

My 91 ranger is real loose in the steering. Local machanic wants $450 to change ball joints. I would rather do it myself, if possible. How do you change the ball joints on a 1991 ford ranger? You need some fairly stout tools for a pickup ball joint job.

1: Remove the brakes. If it's 4x4, you need the socket for the big nut to remove the brake rotor and bearings. There is a lock peg in a groove that can be removed with a magnet or small pick.

2: 4x4: Remove the spindle. 5 or 6 bolts in a circle and you might need to tap the spindle to loosen it up. Don't hurt the threads or smooth areas where the bearings ride. Then remove the axle/u-joint assembly. Fluid will leak from the diff, so a pan is in order. On a 2 wheel drive, the spindle stays put.

3: Remove the cotter pins and large nuts from the upper and lower ball joints and outer tie rod.

4: Big hammer to the steering arm and upper part of the knuckle to break loose the ball joint and tie rod stud tapers and drop the knuckle. It will drop, so you might want one of the ball joint nuts on 2 or 3 turns to catch it. Don't hurt the spot where the brakes ride.

5: Remove knuckle and use a ball joint press set to press the old ones out and new ones in. You probably want a 1/2%26quot; impact wrench to run the press. Hand wrenching a press gets old fast.

6: Reverse procedure to install. Refill the diff. How do you change the ball joints on a 1991 ford ranger?Garages are in desperate need of work due to the economy. Your best bet is to call around and ask for an estimate to replace the ball joints, ( you may need an alignment too), but tell them you want to supply the parts yourself because the garage will mark up the parts price on you. Buy cheaper ball joints if you have no plans on keeping the truck long, but if you still plan on having it around for a while, then buy Moog brand ball joints, they are the best around. So with some luck you may save yourself about $100-200 bucks and you wont get your owns hands dirty at the same time.

    good luck.........
